Most dogs look like, well, dogs. But every once in a while, you see one that makes you stop and wonder where on earth they came from. If you have ever seen a dog and thought it belonged in a sci-fi movie, you are definitely not the only one. Here are 15 most unusual dog breeds.

Chinese Crested

If you crossed a tiny alien with a punk rock star, you’d probably end up with the Chinese Crested. With their mostly hairless bodies, tufts of wild hair on their heads and feet, and skin that sometimes looks spotted or mottled, they don’t resemble any ordinary pup. They’re quirky, playful, and surprisingly affectionate. Their appearance may be out of this world, but their love for cuddles and attention is 100% down-to-earth.

Bergamasco Sheepdog

The Bergamasco looks less like a dog and more like a walking shag carpet. Their unique coat forms long, flat mats called “flocks,” which look like they’re wearing a suit of natural armor. This ancient breed developed its bizarre coat for protection against harsh weather and predators. Underneath all that fur is a smart, gentle, and loyal companion, even if they look more suited to guarding the gates of an alien fortress.

Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless Dog)

The Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo for short, has such an ancient, unusual look that it feels like they belong in a museum, not a living room. Their hairless skin pointed ears, and sleek bodies give them a prehistoric or even extraterrestrial vibe. Despite their alien appearance, Xolos are affectionate, calm, and deeply loyal to their families.

Bedlington Terrier

At first glance, the Bedlington Terrier looks more like a lamb than a dog. With their arched backs, narrow heads, and curly coats, they have a soft, alien elegance that’s completely unique. Don’t be fooled by their delicate looks, though. These terriers are energetic, playful, and full of personality. They’re equal parts gentle companion and fearless hunter — a combination as unusual as their otherworldly appearance.

Puli

Imagine a dog covered in long, rope-like cords that bounce as they move — that’s the Puli. Their natural dreadlocks make them look more like a mop that gained consciousness than a typical dog. These cords are waterproof and protect them from rough weather, but they also make them stand out wherever they go. Underneath all those locks is a clever, energetic pup who loves to work, play, and charm their humans.

Peruvian Inca Orchid

With their smooth, often hairless bodies and large, alert ears, the Peruvian Inca Orchid could easily pass for a creature from a sci-fi flick. Their sleek, almost sculpted look makes them one of the most unusual breeds on the planet. They can be completely hairless or partially coated, but either way, their elegance is impossible to miss.

Komondor

The Komondor is basically a giant, living mop. Their thick, corded coat makes them look more like a walking pile of wool than a dog. Originally bred to guard livestock, their coat protected them from weather and predators, and they still turn heads today. Despite their massive, intimidating appearance, Komondors are calm, loyal, and surprisingly affectionate with their families. They may look like they belong on another planet, but they’re very much home here.

Brussels Griffon

With their big eyes, squished faces, and almost human-like expressions, Brussels Griffons have a distinct look that’s impossible to ignore. They look like tiny, grumpy aliens or maybe wise, ancient beings trapped in small dog bodies. Don’t let their serious faces fool you, though. They’re playful, affectionate, and love being the center of attention. They might look like they came from outer space, but they’re happiest right here, curled up in your lap.

Azawakh

The Azawakh looks like they were designed by a futuristic artist. Tall, lean, and impossibly elegant, they have a look that’s both ancient and strangely modern. Their long legs, narrow heads, and almost fragile appearance make them stand out instantly. Despite their delicate looks, they’re fast, tough, and incredibly loyal.

Thai Ridgeback

With its sleek body, sharp ears, and the signature ridge of fur down its back, the Thai Ridgeback looks like a creature from an old legend. There’s something wild and mysterious about them, but they’re not as untouchable as they seem. They form strong bonds with their owners and are surprisingly affectionate once they trust you.
