The world of interior design is vast and colorful, but even the most famous designers have their preferences—and aversions. Joanna Gaines, a TV personality, author, and interior designer who co-hosted Fixer Upper from 2013 to 2018, inviting spaces, has a few colors she typically avoids. Ever wondered which ones and why?

Joanna’s History with Houses

The mid-forties American interior designer is not a stranger to homes. Shortly after their marriage, she started flipping houses with her husband, Chip Gaines, and selling home goods at Magnolia Market, which they opened in 2003. Fixer Upper would later be born as a result of blogging her experiences.

Mrs Gaines just finished her lake house, and can you guess the color that was everywhere? Green! She told House Beautiful that a lot of emotional connection can come from green, whether a moody green or a vintage one.

Green may be her favorite color, but she has created stunning designs with several other colors. Country Living displayed several eye-catching designs from her. Some color combinations you’ll find there are Beige + Brown + Green, Black + Tan, and Olive Green + Gold + Black.

Perhaps more interesting than her favorite are those hues she avoids. Joanna admits that fuchsia, purple, red, and orange don’t go down well with her. The first three give her anxiety and make her feel really activated, while the last presses an internal button.

Joanna Gaines will be happy to swap those four colors with colors found in nature—like blue and white, both found in the sky—or tonal, earthy shades that remain stylish forever. As someone who loves nature colors, this makes a lot of sense.

Her Advice for You

Joanna has said time and again that there are no rules when it comes to painting your home. She advises using colors that make us feel our best in our space. It’s more about what you want brings you joy than conforming to societal pressure.
