While many people want to live in a big city, others prefer small towns, typically characterized by a more relaxed way of life and a stronger sense of community. California has its fair share of small towns, many of which are lovely enough to make you pick them as your next home or vacation spot. In this list, we’ll walk you through five small but beautiful towns in Cali.

With a lovely name and eye-catching sights, Carmel-by-the-Sea may just be the perfect place. Many tourists find their way here to enjoy its natural appeal, artistic history, and many other things. Its population is 3,220, a decline from what it used to be fifteen years ago. The buildings in this city look like they were stolen from a fairytale story. While it’s only one square mile, it has many nice things to engage residents and visitors, including a white sand beach.

Solvang is a tourist destination, especially for people in Nordic countries. Danish Americans have a place in the history of this place. Their community started building Danish-themed architecture there decades ago, and today, the traditional Danish buildings in the city make it easy to see why it’s called the Danish Capital of America. The four windmills of the city and colorful buildings are some of its visual features. Only a little above 6,100 people live here.

Nevada City

It was formerly known as Ustumah and later bore two other names before becoming the Nevada City we call it today. The town was incorporated in 1856, a few years after European Americans settled there. Nevada City has some lovely buildings that are too hard to ignore; among them are the National Hotel, the Cedar Theatre, Nevada City Firehouse No. 2, and Nevada Brewery. A look at Broad Street can show the best blend of architecture and nature. The population is about 3,150.

Julian

Julian is an International Dark Sky Community that easily comes to the mind of many people when they hear the phrase “apple pie.” There are fewer than 2,000 people residing here. The place itself is a historical landmark in California. Strolling around the area will give you many reasons to whip out your camera. Julian is even more enjoyable when you visit the area during its yearly Julian Apple Days Festival.

Somewhere in Napa County lies the beautiful St Helena, where roughly 5,440 people reside. Many people troop into the city to enjoy the culinary delights, but looking at its buildings will make you rethink what you’re really there for. Its vineyards are another reason people love to go there. Some buildings that will keep you in love with the city are the St. Helena Catholic Church and the colorful Richie Block building.
